Some people with ADHD choose to take medication, while others opt for non-medicated ADHD treatment like counselling or cognitive behavioural therapy.
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that is characterised by hyperactivity, inattention and impulsivity, but at its core, those with ADHD have problems with the brain’s management system, “executive functioning”.
Executive functioning is a group of mental processes that enable people to maintain a consistent set of rules, generate new ones, and adapt them to meet circumstances. These abilities are also known as self-control or impulse control, and they help you manage your emotions.
Cognitive behavioural therapy, or CBT, is a type of talk therapy that can be used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including ADHD.
CBT is based on the idea that our thoughts and beliefs can affect how we feel and behave.
By changing the way we think, we can change the way we feel and behave.
Focusing on how your thoughts, feelings and behaviours are related to each other, CBT can help you to identify and change any negative or unhelpful thoughts and behaviours that may be contributing to your ADHD symptoms.
The goal of CBT for ADHD is to help people learn how to better manage their symptoms.
CBT may include:
• Learning how to better self-monitor and track symptoms
• Developing coping skills to deal with stress & frustration
• Learning how to problem-solve and set goals
• Practicing social skills
Neuro-linguistic programming is a technique that uses the power of language to help people change their thoughts and behaviours.
NLP works by helping you understand how your thoughts and behaviours are related to your feelings and sensations. It can be used to help you overcome challenges you face with ADHD.
NLP techniques work by helping you focus on your goals and by teaching you how to use your own resources to achieve those goals.
It can help you identify the thoughts and behaviours that are holding you back, and it can also help you to develop new habits and strategies for overcoming those challenges.
If you decide within 3 months of choosing our counselling package that you may benefit from treatment in the form of medication, we can organise a medical file review – this file review is a standalone appointment with a clinical team member to ensure the safety and suitability of medication in each circumstance.
If you decide to proceed with a medicated treatment option alongside or following your non-medicated treatment plan, an upgrade/package fee would be discussed and agreed upon from our available options.
Anything after 3 months would require a reassessment.
