What is ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects both children and adults, causing challenges with attention, impulsivity, and/or hyperactivity in daily life. People with ADHD may find it hard to focus, act without thinking, or struggle to control their energy levels.

Busting the myths.

ADHD is often misunderstood, and myths about the condition can be damaging. It is not caused by poor parenting or excessive sugar. And it is not something people just ‘grow out of.’

Types of ADHD and symptoms

ADHD can present in different ways and may change over time. Knowing which type you or your loved one has helps ensure a more accurate diagnosis and allows us to tailor a treatment plan to better manage symptoms.

Predominantly Inattentive

This type of ADHD is mainly characterised by difficulty focusing, completing tasks, and staying organised. People with this type may be forgetful, easily distracted, and overlook details.

Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive

Symptoms include fidgeting or tapping hands or feet, difficulty staying seated, talking excessively, interrupting others, and making impulsive decisions without considering the consequences. The focus is more on hyperactivity and impulsivity than on inattention.

Combined Presentation

This type includes a mix of both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms, meaning people experience challenges from both categories.

What makes ADHD Different

What makes ADHD different?

While it’s common for people to experience some of these behaviours occasionally, the key difference with ADHD is how often and intensely these symptoms occur. In individuals with ADHD, these behaviours disrupt daily life, affecting work, relationships, and overall wellbeing.

ADHD in children

Many children are naturally energetic and curious, but when these behaviours start to affect school, relationships, or daily life, it might be time to consider whether ADHD could be at play.

Common signs at school:

  • Difficulty staying focused during lessons
  • Making careless mistakes in schoolwork
  • Frequently losing things or forgetting homework

Behavioural signs:

  • Difficulty listening when spoken to
  • Fidgeting or struggling to stay seated
  • Interrupting or blurting our answers too early

Social challenges:

  • Interrupting others or butting into conversations or games
  • Struggling to wait their turn
  • Difficulty picking up on social cues and expectations
Many children will show these behaviours

Many children will show these behaviours from time to time.

But for children with ADHD, they’re more frequent and disruptive, making learning and socialising harder.

When to get support

If you’re unsure whether your child’s behaviours are a sign of ADHD, our free online screening tool can give you a clear starting point.

If our screening tool provides a positive indication of ADHD, you can choose to book an ADHD assessment with one of our qualified ADHD clinicians for an official diagnosis and treatment options.

ADHD in adults

ADHD isn’t just a childhood condition – it can follow you into adulthood, often presenting in ways that are more challenging to identify. While symptoms may be similar to those in children, they often show up differently in daily adult life.

Common signs in the workplace:

  • Difficulty focusing on tasks, often jumping between them
  • Struggling to organise or prioritise workloads
  • Missing deadlines or forgetting important responsibilities.

Behavioural signs:

  • Restlessness, struggling to stay still or focus for long periods
  • Impulsive decisions that may lead to regret
  • Difficulty maintaining conversations or social connections

Impact on personal life

  • Emotional instability, including frequent mood swings
  • Challenges with maintaining long-term relationships
  • Interrupting others or butting into conversations
ADHD in adults can result as setbacks

Left untreated, ADHD in adults can result in setbacks at work, in relationships, and in overall wellbeing.

It’s crucial to identify the symptoms and seek diagnosis and treatment, as the right support can significantly improve your quality of life.
